Highlight of birds banded at the BBL during fall 2018 migration.

The Bird Banding Lab (BBL) at USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC) recently finished the fall 2018 banding season at the long-term migration station on USFWS Patuxent Research Refuge (PRR). The banding station has been operating since 1979 in shrub canopy habitat located on the PRR. This station is designed to sample songbirds using the area as stopover point during their fall migrations. This fall, the BBL’s banding station on PRR banded 1,376 individual birds from 77 species. These birds ranged in size from tiny Golden-crowned and Ruby-crowned Kinglets to much larger Yellow-Shafted Flickers. Other species banded this fall include Blue Jays, Hermit Thrushes, Black-throated Green Warblers, Black-throated Blue Warblers, Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, Yellow-breasted Chats, White-throated Sparrows, Fox Sparrows, and Slate-colored Juncos, just to name a few.
