Johnson, Miehls Give Crash Course in Great Lakes Sea Lamprey to Veterinary Students

Research ecologist, Dr. Nick Johnson, and GLSC/Great Lakes Fishery Commission communications associate, Dr. Andrea Miehls (Millersburg, Michigan), were invited to present to the Michigan State University (MSU) virtual graduate course, “Clerkship on Aquatic Animal Medicine,” on April 1, 2021. Nick began with a discussion of invasive sea lamprey in the Great Lakes and their effects on fisheries and ecosystems, Andrea led a demonstration with live sea lamprey and a question and answer session, and Nick concluded the event with a virtual tour of GLSC’s Hammond Bay Biological Station (HBBS). The course is taught by Dr. Bartolomeo Gorgoglione, assistant professor at MSU’s Aquatic Animal Health Laboratory. Bart previously toured the HBBS—experiencing the thrill of live sea lamprey in person—and wanted to share the experience with his students.
