The New England Water Science Center is happy to announce the selection of Jonathan Morrison as Associate Director of the Applied Hydrology Program and Gregory Stewart as Associate Director of the Hydrologic Monitoring Program.

Jonathan Morrison, Associate Director of the Applied Hydrology Program
Jon began his career with the USGS over 30 years ago as a Student Trainee in the Connecticut District Office. After graduating with a BS degree in Environmental Earth Science from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1988, he became a Hydrologic Technician working on a variety of groundwater-quality projects, and then as a Hydrologic Technician in the Data Program collecting surface-water quality samples, groundwater levels, and streamgaging data. During that time, he developed extensive experience in streamflow measurements and water-quality monitoring. In 1992 Jon became the Project Chief of the Water Quality Network in Connecticut, including incorporating many Cycle 1 NAWQA data-collection sites. In 1995, Jon converted to a Hydrologist position and took on the role of Project Chief for several watershed water-quality projects. During this time, Jon earned an MS from the University of Connecticut in Natural Resources. In 2001, Jon became a Supervisory Hydrologist as the Data Chief for the Connecticut Office and was responsible for overseeing all data-collection programs as well as several water-quality projects. Jon expanded the data collection networks and adopted the use of hydroacoustic technologies in the streamgaging program. Jon was also responsible for large data collection activities in Connecticut after Tropical Storm Irene and Hurricane Sandy.
In 2014, Jon became the Chief of the Connecticut Office and was responsible for technical oversight and program management. In 2015 the Connecticut Office was merged into the New England Water Science Center where Jon served as the Section Chief for the Water Quality Networks and Water Use section. He also served as the Acting Associate Director for the Investigative Studies Section during this time. Jon most recently served as the Chief of Surface Water-Quality Networks Section of the New England Water Science Center. He has conducted several watershed water-quality studies and published several USGS reports on nutrient transport and water-quality issues in Connecticut. Jon’s primary responsibility was managing the operation of a variety of cooperative water-quality monitoring networks across New England. He coordinates the various Federal, State, and municipal partners that actively collaborate on the monitoring networks. View Staff Profile
Gregory Stewart, Associate Director of the Hydrologic Monitoring Program
Greg began his career with the USGS over 30 years ago as a Student Trainee in the Maine District Office. After graduating with a BS degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine in 1994, Greg became a Civil Engineer in the Data Program collecting streamgaging data, acting as the district computer specialist, and conducting flood insurance studies. In 1998 Greg became the hydroacoustics specialist and started to manage the Maine non-continuous streamgaging program. In addition, from 1994 to 2002, Greg was the lead author of 9 different flood insurance studies. In 2002, Greg became the Data Chief and Surface Water Specialist for the Maine Office and was responsible for overseeing all data-collection programs. In 2005 his role was expanded to oversee the Maine Studies Section. As the Data and Studies sections chief, Greg was the first line supervisor over many publications authored by the staff.
In 2013 FEMA approached USGS Northeast Region asking for Greg to be the lead of the New England FEMA program. In this role Greg needed to regularly coordinate with all four New England Water Science Center Directors and FEMA leadership in addition to coordinating the science. In 2015 the Maine Office was merged into the New England Water Science Center where Greg served as the Section Chief of the Surface Water Investigations Section and the Hydrology and Hydraulic Section. Greg recently served as the Acting Associate Director for the Applied Hydrology Section. Greg is a licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Maine. View Staff Profile
