Pedestrian evacuation modeling by USGS geographers Nathan Wood and Jeanne Jones and Sacramento State University is featured in a story about vertical evacuation refuges in southwest Washington for the February 2014 issue of National Geographic magazine.
Rooftop Refuge
Modeling results were used to create a map of pedestrian travel time to safety out of tsunami hazard zones associated with a Cascadia subduction zone earthquake. Results were useful in demonstrating the evacuation challenges for the local schools and contributed to recent efforts to begin planning for a tsunami refuge at a Westport elementary school.
