USGS Announces Recipients of Recent Earthquake Research Grants and Cooperative Agreements
USGS recently awarded more than \$23 million for earthquake monitoring and applied research. This funding supports earthquake research in high-risk areas, contributes to the maintenance and operation of seismic networks and supports further development of earthquake early warning systems.
The U.S. Geological Survey recently awarded more than \$23 million in funding for grants and cooperative agreements, including: \$4 million for external research grants, as well as more than \$12.5 million to advance ShakeAlert® earthquake early warning, more than \$6.5 million for the Advanced National Seismic System regional seismic networks and \$400,000 for geodetic network cooperative agreements.
USGS grants and agreements support critical research for mapping seismic hazards, developing earthquake planning scenarios, defining the prehistoric record of large earthquakes, investigating the origins of earthquakes and improving methods for predicting earthquake effects.
After reviewing more than 160 applications, expert review panels selected 53 recipients for earthquake research grants and separate panels reviewed ANSS and ShakeAlert cooperative agreements. The recent awardees include:
- External research grants were awarded to more than four dozen institutions, including the Georgia Institute of Technology; the University of Mississippi; the University of Memphis; Brigham Young University; the University of Texas, Austin; Utah State University; Ohio State University and many others.
- New 3-year ShakeAlert cooperative agreements were awarded to the California Institute of Technology; Central Washington University; the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich; the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Nevada, Reno; the University of Oregon and the University of Washington.
- New 5-year ANSS cooperative agreements were awarded to the University of Alaska Fairbanks; the California Institute of Technology; the University of California, Berkeley; the University of Memphis; the University of Nevada, Reno; the University of Oregon; the University of South Carolina; the University of Utah and the University of Washington.
- New 5-year geodetic network cooperative agreements were awarded to the University of California, Berkeley; Central Washington University; the University of Memphis and the University of Nevada, Reno.
