CWD continues to spread across the landscape creating challenges for wildlife management agencies. NWHC’s work on CWD ranges from technical assistance for management agencies, tracking the spread of CWD, measuring impacts of CWD on deer populations, and developing novel management tools. More information about CWD, including fact sheets and additional information resources, can be found on our website.

Expanding Distribution of Chronic Wasting Disease
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been detected in 36 US states and five Canadian provinces in free-ranging cervids and/or captive cervid facilities.
Episode 3 - Chronic Wasting Disease Episode 3 - Chronic Wasting Disease
In this episode of Outstanding in the Field, we’ll be talking about chronic wasting disease, or CWD, a fatal and contagious wildlife disease that affects animals in the deer family and is of great concern in North America. USGS science is helping wildlife managers across the U.S. address this ominous disease.
Chronic Wasting Disease
Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is an emerging infectious disease that is fatal to free-ranging and captive animals in Cervidae, the deer family. CWD is one member of a family of diseases called transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), and is thought to be caused by prions. CWD is the only TSE known to affect free-ranging wildlife.
