USGS scientific software information products and scientific data products follow similar FSP requirements for review and approval.  Both are considered noninterpretive information. Scientific data are subject to the requirements of the OPEN Government Data Act while scientific software information products are subject to the SHARE IT Act. These authorities focus on increasing access to the results of federally funded scientific research. Like FSP for scientific data release products, the FSP for USGS scientific software information products requires documentation, review, and Science Center Director approval tracked in the Information Product Data System (IPDS), with the additional requirement of a static version of the software hosted on the USGS-approved platform. Scientific data and scientific software information products each have similar but unique review requirements. A USGS scientific software information product review covers three components (science, technology, and security), whereas a scientific data product requires review of data and metadata.
