USGS scientific software information products must be released following the requirements described in SM 502.11 and may be cited like any other published work. 

Additionally, portions of a scientific software information product may be attached – or included in – other USGS information product types if allowable through the policies governing those products. For example, a subset of a scientific software information product may be included as part of a data release or as an appendix in a manuscript. These subsets are not directly citable; however, the scientific software information product must be cited, and the portion may be referred to in this context. Determining when this approach is appropriate is at the discretion of the principal author and science center approving official or the delegated designee.
