The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is considered a scientific authority and usage of scientific and technical names in USGS-authored information products must be accurate. A names review, as described in USGS Survey Manual (SM) policy chapter SM 502.4, section 4, ensures that technical, scientific nomenclature has been checked and verified for accuracy, consistency, and appropriate use. This review also includes verifying that Tribal names mentioned are federally recognized and that words, names, or phrases that may be viewed as derogatory or offensive in nature are not used in future USGS information products.
