A names review is required for all U.S. Geological Survey-authored information products that include technical biologic, hydrologic, geographic, or geologic names or descriptions. In addition, Tribal names should be verified, and words, names, or phrases that may be viewed as potentially derogatory and (or) offensive in nature should be addressed prior to publication of future USGS information products. The names review should include verification of spelling, use, style, and conformance with the most recent principles and subject matter code. The names review should cover all components of an information product to verify consistency and use, including body text, tables, figures, captions, charts, appendices, plates, and supplements. The names review should be conducted, reconciled, and documented prior to submitting the manuscript for Bureau approval.
