Who can conduct a names review? [206]

Anyone possessing appropriate subject matter expertise may complete a names review, separately or as part of a peer review. Reviewer should not be directly associated with work being reviewed. [Read more]

A names review may be performed by a specialist who possesses the appropriate subject matter expertise, separately or as part of a peer review, as long as the person is not directly associated with the work being reviewed. The reviewer should consult an authoritative source to support the names review (refer to names review resource examples). As part of their editorial review, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), Science Publishing Network (SPN) conducts the names review for all publication series products with the exception of limited-use series (refer to USGS Survey Manual (SM) policy chapters SM 1100.2 and SM 1100.3). For external publications such as journal articles, cooperator publications, and preprints, and limited-use USGS series publications, an author can request a names review from the SPN or the Geologic Names Committee (GNC) by sending an email to spn_gnr@usgs.gov or gnc@usgs.gov.
