Ecosystems and Habitats
We study how ecosystems and habitats support fish, wildlife, and people. Partnerships with State and Federal agencies, universities, and conservation organizations, allow delivery of science that guides habitat restoration, species recovery, and resource management.
Red spruce forests and Northern Flying Squirrels
Red spruce forests provide services such as clean water and carbon sequestration, as well as habitat for species of high conservation concern but were heavily reduced by early logging and slowed in recovery by pests, acid deposition, and climate change. The northern flying squirrel can aid red spruce restoration since their presence indicates healthy spruce forests.
Recreational Fisheries in the Northern Glaciated Plains
Fishing drives major economic value in the Northern Glaciated Plains, but water level variability and quality threaten fish communities and angler access. This project models how shifting hydrology will affect fish, access points, angler behavior, and spending to guide future infrastructure and management decisions.
