Updated USGS Topo Maps for Puerto Rico & the U.S. Virgin Islands

The USGS is pleased to announce the release of new US Topo maps for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These updated topographic maps offer valuable, current geographic information for residents, visitors, and professionals, providing essential resources for communities in these areas. While USGS OnDemand Topo maps have been available since 2022 for these locations, this is the first update of US Topo maps for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands since 2018 and 2013, respectively.

These new US Topo maps provide a detailed depiction of the islands' topography, natural environment, and human-made features. Created at a 1:20,000-scale, the maps are valuable for a variety of purposes, including emergency management, infrastructure development, water resource and flood risk management, natural resource conservation, and recreational activities.

What's New in These Maps?

  • The maps include numerous updated features across National Map datasets, including elevation, hydrography (surface water), geographic names, boundaries, transportation, structures, and imagery.

  • Many of the updated features stem from collaborations with many agencies from Federal to local. For example, they include the latest data from the Census Bureau containing accurately mapped community roads and boundaries.

  • Improvements have also been made to National Park Service points of interest and US Forest Service recreation sites, along with the aggregation of additional trail data.

  • Over 370 updated structures in Puerto Rico and over 100 updated in the U.S. Virgin Islands were identified and verified by volunteer data editors working with The National Map Corps

The USGS recognizes the importance of up-to-date geospatial information across all States and territories. Efforts are currently underway to improve data for the Pacific Territories, laying the groundwork for generating and updating US Topo maps across the entire United States and all territories in the future.
