Implications of climate change for Alaska's seabirds Implications of climate change for Alaska's seabirds

Seabirds are prominent and highly visible components of marine ecosystems that will be affected by global climate change. The Bering Sea region is particularly important to seabirds; populations there are larger and more diverse than in any similar region in North America—over 90% of seabirds breeding in the continental United States are found in this region. Seabirds, so named because...

Setting the stage for a sustainable Pacific salmon fisheries strategy Setting the stage for a sustainable Pacific salmon fisheries strategy

Salmon and steelhead Oncorhynchus spp., have been keystone species for ecosystems and human cultures of the North American Pacific coast for cons. Yet, in the past century, many populations have been greatly diminished and some are now extinct-the result of a combination of factors, including habitat loss and degradation, overfishing, natural variability in salmon production, negative...

Data for periphyton and water samples collected from the south Florida ecosystem, 1995 and 1996 Data for periphyton and water samples collected from the south Florida ecosystem, 1995 and 1996

This report presents data for samples of periphyton and water collected in 1995 and 1996 from Water Conservation Areas, the Big Cypress National Preserve, and the Everglades National Park in south Florida. Periphyton samples were analyzed for concentrations of total mercury, methylmercury, nitrogen, phosphorus, organic carbon, and inorganic carbon . Water-column samples collected on the...

Leucocytozoon simondi in Emperor Geese from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in Alaska Leucocytozoon simondi in Emperor Geese from the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in Alaska

We surveyed Emperor Geese (Chen canagica) in western Alaska for avian hematozoa. Blood smears were collected from 134 adults and goslings in late July 1996, on their breeding grounds on the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. One of 134 (0.7%) Emperor Geese harbored Leucocytozoon simondi, representing a new host record for this parasite. No other hematozoa were detected. This is one of few reports of...

Geologic map of central (interior) Alaska Geologic map of central (interior) Alaska

Introduction: This map and associated digital databases are the result of a compilation and reinterpretation of published and unpublished 1:250,000- and limited 1:125,000- and 1:63,360-scale mapping. The map area covers approximately 416,000 sq km (134,000 sq mi) and encompasses 25 1:250,000-scale quadrangles in central Alaska. The compilation was done as part of the U.S. Geological...

Selection of forage-fish schools by Murrelets and Tufted Puffins in Prince William Sound, Alaska Selection of forage-fish schools by Murrelets and Tufted Puffins in Prince William Sound, Alaska

We collected hydroacoustic and bird-observation data simultaneously along transects in three areas in Prince William Sound, Alaska, 21 July-11 August 1995. The probability of the association of fish schools with Marbled Murrelets (Brachyramphus marmoratus) and Tufted Puffins (Fratercula cirrhata) was determined through the use of resource selection functions based on logistic regression...

Investigating flight response of Pacific brant to helicopters at Izembek Lagoon, Alaska by using logistic regression Investigating flight response of Pacific brant to helicopters at Izembek Lagoon, Alaska by using logistic regression

Izembek Lagoon, an estuary in Alaska, is a very important staging area for Pacific brant, a small migratory goose. Each fall, nearly the entire Pacific Flyway population of 130,000 brant flies to Izembek Lagoon and feeds on eelgrass to accumulate fat reserves for nonstop transoceanic migration to wintering areas as distant as Mexico. In the past 10 years, offshore drilling activities in...
