Geohydrology and water quality of the Calumet aquifer, in the vicinity of the Grand Calumet River/Indiana Harbor Canal, northwestern Indiana Geohydrology and water quality of the Calumet aquifer, in the vicinity of the Grand Calumet River/Indiana Harbor Canal, northwestern Indiana

The water-table configuration of the Calumet aquifer in the vicinity of the Grand Calumet River/Indiana Harbor Canal in Lake County, northwestern Indiana, reflects the complexity of the shallow ground-water-flow system. Large depressions in the water table in sewered areas interrupt broad ground-water divides between rivers. The aquifer/stream interactions along the Grand Calumet River/...

Enhanced immune response and protection rainbow trout to Aeromonas salmonicida bacterin following prior immersion immunostimulants Enhanced immune response and protection rainbow trout to Aeromonas salmonicida bacterin following prior immersion immunostimulants

Bathing rainbow trout for 30 min in immunostimulant solutions before a 2 min bath in Aeromonas salmonicida O antigen bacterin elevated both the nonspecific defence mechanisms and the specific immune response. Levamisole, a known T lymphocyte stimulator in mammals; QAC, a quaternary ammonium compound, and ISK a short-chain polypeptide, heightened the neutrophil oxidative activity as...

Modeling the tides of Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bays Modeling the tides of Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bays

A time-dependent, three-dimensional numerical modeling study of the tides of Massachusetts and Cape Code Bays, motivated by construction of a new sewage treatment plant and ocean outfall for the city of Boston, has been undertaken by the authors. The numerical model being used is a hybrid version of the Blumberg and Mellor ECOM3D model, modified to include a semi-implicit time-stepping...

Water Resources Data, New Jersey, Water Year 1992, Volume 2. Ground-Water Data Water Resources Data, New Jersey, Water Year 1992, Volume 2. Ground-Water Data

Water Resources data for the 1992 water year for New Jersey consists of records of stage, discharge, and water quality of streams; stage, contents, and water quality of lakes and reservoirs; and water levels and water quality of ground water. Volume 2 contains records of ground-water levels from 225 wells and water-quality analyses of ground water from 178 wells. These data represent...

Osmoregulatory actions of growth hormone and its mode of action in salmonids: A review Osmoregulatory actions of growth hormone and its mode of action in salmonids: A review

Osmoregulatory actions of growth hormone (GH) and its mode of action in salmonids are reviewed. We present evidence suggesting that insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) mediates some of the actions of GH on seawater acclimation. Plasma concentration and turnover of GH rise following exposure to seawater. Exogenous GH (in vivo) increases gill Na+,K+-ATPase activity and the number of gill...

Dieldrin variation in diet composition of a riverine fish community Dieldrin variation in diet composition of a riverine fish community

Although diel food habit studies have been undertaken on a number of individual species, few studies have examined diel variation in the diets of fish communities. We examined the diel diet variation and feeding periodicity of a fish community in the Juniata River, Pennsylvania. Nine species, totalling 1,098 fish, were collected at 4-h intervals over a 24-h period in October 1989, in...

Strontium Strontium

Part of a special section reviewing the market performance of industrial minerals in 1992. Imports of celestite (strontium ore) reached nearly 45 kt, which represents an increase of 35 percent over 1991. Mexico supplied almost all of the celestite. Nearly 70 percent of the strontium consumed in the U.S. is used in television picture tube faceplate glass to block X-ray emissions.

Natal dispersal and gene flow in white-tailed deer in northeastern Minnesota Natal dispersal and gene flow in white-tailed deer in northeastern Minnesota

I documented natal dispersal and gene flow in 79 yearling white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) in northeastern Minnesota during 1974–1988. Sixty-four percent (n = 28) of 44 males and 20% (n = 7) of 35 females dispersed from their natal home ranges when 1.0–1.5-years old. Eighty-six percent and 95%, of all yearlings including nondispersers, dispersed ≤26 and ≤38 km, respectively...

Natural range expansion and local extirpation of an exotic psittacine--an unsuccessful colonization attempt Natural range expansion and local extirpation of an exotic psittacine--an unsuccessful colonization attempt

The Brown-throated Parakeet Aratinga pertinax is native to Panama, northern South America, and the islands off the northern coast of Venezuela. It is widely believed that the parakeet was introduced to St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, from Curacao before the mid-19th century, although no records exist as to when and how this may have occurred. The parakeet was not recorded from Vieques or...
