Kīlauea summit subsides and produces frequent earthquakes

On June 23, 2018 at 4:32 p.m. HST after approximately 17 hours of elevated seismicity, a collapse explosion occurred at the summit if Kīlauea. The energy released by the event was equivalent to a magnitude 5.3 earthquake. During the intense shaking, rockfalls cascaded down the northern margin of the caldera wall just below Uēkahuna Bluff sending rock dust into the air.

Today, HVO scientists measured concentrations greater than 10 ppm in a broad area adjacent to Halema‘uma‘u crater. Sulfur Dioxide gas is persistently emitted at Kîlauea's summit. Typical concentrations are generally negligible except for areas downwind of Halema‘uma‘u crater, where they can get up to 2.5 ppm (parts-per-million) in narrow zones.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports that the earthquake, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0, was centered about 30 miles south-southwest of Hilo, Hawai?i, in the Hawai?i Volcanoes National Park, near the base of Kilauea. It struck about 8:24 p.m. local time. Several small aftershocks have been reported.
