Evaluating high, moderate, and low concentrations of groundwater constituents across principal aquifer locations in the conterminous United States

January 2, 2025

This software release contains code to process and create pie and bar charts that display high, moderate, and low concentrations of groundwater constituents across principal aquifer locations in the conterminous United States for the National Integrated Water Availability Assessment (IWAAs) Water Quality Chapter. Data are processed from Lindsey et al., 2022 and Belitz et al., 2022. Water quality thresholds data is supplied from Belitz et al., 2022 Table S4 which contain benchmark values for maximum contaminant levels (MCL), secondary maximum contaminant level (SMCL), Tier-1 and Tier-2 (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Integrated Risk Information System) constituents. Data from Belitz et al., 2022 Table S1 and Table S8 are further processed to determine the population (in millions) and area (in km2) affected by high and moderate concentration of constituents.
