oilmapr: Process and map time-stamped oil and gas well activity.
The oilmapr package is designed to help users efficiently map time-stamped oil and gas well activity data. This package was originally built to use with data retrieved from the Wyoming Oil & Gas Conservation Commission (WOGCC) online database. With this package, users can generate shapefiles of active well locations, create raster datasets representing well densities across user-specified polygons and years, and produce summary statistics of the buffered activity area by wells within those polygons. These products facilitate comprehensive assessments and reporting of oil and gas activity, including land-use planning, leasing, and environmental and biological assessments. This product builds upon a previously developed static dataset published on USGS ScienceBase (Hayes et al. 2023) used in research on mule deer habitat use and demographics (Hayes et al. 2026, Janousek et al. 2026). The raster and buffer area calculations use functions that are adaptable to data sources other than the WOGCC database. All users functionally need is a dataset of wellsite locations (lat/lons) with columns for describing the Start and Stop years. Please contact authors with questions about adapting these functions to your specific datasets.
