Sound Waves Newsletter - December 2018-January 2019
USGS scientists install cameras and measure properties of permafrost on Barter Island; taxpayer dollars to be used for equipment, maps, and scientific studies to prepare for future calamities; geophysical mapping of stamp sands in Lake Superior; WHCMSC partners with community for STEM; coastal engineer joins PCMSC CoSMoS team; and much more in this December 2018-January 2019 issue of Sound Waves.
Added Funding Aids Recovery from 2017 Hurricanes and Wildfires
In 2017, Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria caused roughly $265 billion in damage and killed more than 3,000 people in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The same year, California wildfires killed 47 people, burned over a million acres of land, and destroyed or damaged more than 10,000 buildings.
Mapping the Stamp Sands of Lake Superior
In September 2018, the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC) conducted high-resolution geophysical mapping to determine the distribution and thickness of historical mine tailings on the floor of Lake Superior.
Partnerships with the Scientific Community: Enhancing Science Education and Science Literacy in Cape Cod
Woods Hole in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, is well known for its vibrant scientific community. It is home to the USGS Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC), as well as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, NOAA Northeast Fisheries Science Center, the Marine Biological Laboratory, the Sea Education Association, and numerous other research organizations and facilities.
Coastal Engineering Contractor Assists Flood Modeling in California and Washington
Coastal engineer Babak Tehranirad recently joined the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center in Santa Cruz, California, to work on the Coastal Storm Modeling System (CoSMoS). This state-of-the-art forecasting tool predicts coastal flooding and erosion under multiple storm conditions and a suite of sea-level rise scenarios.
Recent Coastal and Marine Fieldwork - December 2018-January 2019
Recently USGS scientists visited 10 coastal and offshore locations, studying tsunami and hurricane deposits in Hawai‘i, monitoring Cape Cod estuary health, testing technology in Tampa Bay, and much more. Here’s a quick overview of some fieldwork by our researchers.
