Charles J. Henny
I am a Scientist Emeritus at the USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center.
My research focuses on field studies of raptors and fish-eating birds, particularly Ospreys. I am interested in the unique situations and characteristics that make particular species vulnerable to contaminant threats. In my spare time I enjoy collecting bird books.

Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) eggs were collected from 1991 to 1997 at nests (n = 121) upstream and downstream of bleached kraft pulp mills and at reference sites in the Fraser and Columbia River drainage systems of British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. The Osprey population associated with Darwin Nature Reserve and the Rybinsk Reservoir increased from only a few pairs prior to the creation of the reservoir in the late 1940s , to about 45-50 pairs in 1994. Fifty-two eggs (one per nest) of 12 species of raptors were collected in 1992-93 for contaminant analysis in three southern European locations in Russia. One Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus) egg was also collected farther northwest in the Novgorod region. A high DDE concentration (27.3 ppm, wet weight [w/w]) in the Peregrine Falcon egg raised concern for the species in European Russia...
