Effects of management practices on grassland birds: Horned Lark Effects of management practices on grassland birds: Horned Lark
Information on the habitat requirements and effects of habitat management on grassland birds were summarized from information in more than 5,500 published and unpublished papers. A range map is provided to indicate the relative densities of the species in North America, based on Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) data. Although birds frequently are observed outside the breeding range indicated...

A comprehensive review of Farm Bill contributions to wildlife conservation, 1985-2000 A comprehensive review of Farm Bill contributions to wildlife conservation, 1985-2000
A comprehensive review of the scientific literature was undertaken to determine wildlife responses to programs established under the conservation title of the 1985 Food Security Act as amended in 1990 and 1996 (Farm Bill). Literature was annotated and summaries of wildlife responses were provided for the Conservation Reserve Program CRP, Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP), Wildlife Habitat...

Statistical considerations in monitoring birds over large areas Statistical considerations in monitoring birds over large areas
The proper design of a monitoring effort depends primarily on the objectives desired, constrained by the resources available to conduct the work. Typically, managers have numerous objectives, such as determining abundance of the species, detecting changes in population size, evaluating responses to management activities, and assessing habitat associations. A design that is optimal for...

Waterfowl research priorities in the northern Great Plains Waterfowl research priorities in the northern Great Plains
It is necessary periodically to identify research priorities so that future research will be directed toward the most pertinent issues in waterfowl ecology and management. To that end, Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center convened a quorum of experts on the ecology of breeding waterfowl, the Waterfowl Working Group, to 1) develop a mission statement, 2) identify waterfowl research...

Le Conte's sparrows breeding in Conservation Reserve Program fields: precipitation and patterns of population change Le Conte's sparrows breeding in Conservation Reserve Program fields: precipitation and patterns of population change
The climate of the North American Great Plains is highly dynamic, with great year-to-year variability in precipitation and periodic, often extreme, wet and dry cycles (Bragg 1995). Drought is a major force of ecological disturbance on the Great Plains and has played a key role in directing the evolution of the grassland biota of this region (Knopf and Samson 1997). Although grassland...

Uncommon breeding birds in North Dakota: Population estimates and frequencies of occurrence Uncommon breeding birds in North Dakota: Population estimates and frequencies of occurrence
Breeding bird populations were surveyed on 128 randomly selected quarter-sections throughout North Dakota in 1967, 1992, and 1993. Population estimates and frequencies of occurrence are reported for 92 uncommon breeding bird species with statewide frequencies of less than 10%.
