John Kelly

I am a GIS Specialist/Computer Scientist with the USGS Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center. My main tasks include creating geospatial tools in ArcGIS Pro, handling and maintaining geospatial data, data entry and QA/QC, and web development.

I get to help out in a lot of different areas. I devote most of my time to working on the Conservation Efforts Database (CED). My first major project with the CED was creating new ArcGIS Pro templates to enable users to enter efforts in bulk. This project included rewriting and creating new Python scripts to be used in ArcGIS Pro tools. My other work within the CED mostly revolves around data management, whether that is handling data input for our partners, doing QA/QC on existing data, or helping keep our geospatial data up to date.

Other duties include helping with various web development/programming tasks, both with the CED and the Pacific Northwest Aquatic Monitoring Partnership (PNAMP), working on tools to automate metadata editing, and writing documentation for technical processes.

My main professional interest is GIS, specifically in the development of tools using Python/ArcPy. I enjoy creating tools that can manipulate spatial data and processes to display the data in a meaningful way. An area of this work I hope to explore more of is cartography and map design, as I have an interest in the more artistic side of GIS.
