Kevin T Gallagher
Mr. Gallagher oversees the USGS Geologic and Topographic Mapping, Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation, Biological Information, and Science Informatics Programs, as well as the world's largest Earth Science Library.
- Mr. Kevin T. Gallagher began his 37-year Federal career with the Navy as a computer programmer at the Naval Research Laboratory. Mr. Gallagher worked in a series of leadership positions, including Branch Chief, Division Director, and Chief Technology Officer, overseeing technology programs in the Navy, Coast Guard and U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
- Mr. Gallagher has led transformational change in the fields of information technology and mapping. He entered the Senior Executive Service in 2008. He served as the USGS Associate Director for Geospatial Information and Chief Information Officer (CIO) from 2008 through 2010 and has served as the USGS Associate Director for Core Science Systems from 2011 to the present.
- As the Associate Director for Geospatial Information and CIO (2008-2010), Mr. Gallagher oversaw strategic development and operations of USGS’ complex information technology (IT) programs, including IT policy, IT security, telecommunications, enterprise publishing, and the world’s largest Earth Science Library.
- As the Associate Director for Core Science Systems (2011-present), he oversees the Nation’s Civilian Mapping Programs, including strategic program development, meaningful accountability measures, budget initiatives, and representation of the bureau to the Department, the Administration, Congress, Universities, Tribes, and other Federal, State, and local agencies.
- Priority programs include: Landsat satellite operations, the Uncrewed Aerial Systems Program, the National Civil Applications Committee, the National Map, the 3D Elevation Program, and the Earth Mapping Resources Initiative. In addition, he oversees a high-performance supercomputer, the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center, the Earth Remote Observations Systems data center, and several research collections including the National Ice Core Laboratory and the Geologic Core Research Repository. He also supports international mapping programs and represents the U.S. in a partnership with eight Arctic Nations to improve mapping of the Arctic territory.
- Mr. Gallagher’s current priorities include a partnership with NASA to develop the Landsat Next satellite mission and the Sustainable Land Imaging program to ensure sustained monitoring of the Earth’s climate and access to land remote sensing observations for U.S. and global scientists and users.
