Mike Budde is a geographer with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) at the Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. For more than 25 years, he has applied satellite remote sensing technologies to monitor vegetation dynamics, surface energy balance, snow cover, and other landscape processes. Budde is a member of the Human Health and Food Security focus area within the Integrated Science and Applications Branch at USGS EROS, where he serves as Program Manager for the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET). In this role, he provides strategic leadership in the development and application of remote sensing datasets and geospatial tools that support the monitoring of crop and pastoral conditions, providing early warning of food insecurity in developing countries for the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Disaster and Humanitarian Response.
In addition to his FEWS NET responsibilities, Budde serves as the USGS Liaison to the International Charter Space and Major Disasters, a global partnership through which satellite data are made available to support disaster response and management efforts worldwide. As a member of the Executive Secretariat and an Authorized User, he can activate the Charter on behalf of domestic and international emergency management organizations and helps oversee its operational activities on behalf of USGS.
