Welcome to the Midwest Region! Our region includes 18 Science Centers in 11 States from the Great Lakes to the Dakotas, south to Missouri and Kentucky. Our streamgage network is used to monitor and assess water resources across the region. Other research focuses on fisheries and aquatic ecosystems, midcontinental plant/animal species, invasive species, wildlife disease, and energy and mining.

Clinker capped Tongue River Formation near Lame Deer, Montana

Clinker is formed when rock units that overlie exposed burning coal seams are baked and fused. The red and brown clinker is more resistant to erosion than non-baked adjacent Tongue River Formation sandstones and forms caps of many plateaus and buttes. Photo taken north of Lame Deer, Montana.

USGS - GLSC SCUBA divers search Flathead Lake, MT for zebra mussels after water quality samples detected the presence of a larval stage.  The dive team did not find evidence of adult zebra mussels.

A meltwater stonefly larva (Lednia tumana) sits on a cobbled snow fed stream in Glacier National Park. The species is threatened by climate warming induced glacier and snow loss and has been petitioned for protection under the U.S. Endangered Species Act due to climate-change-induced habitat loss.
