Geochemical Data Portal for Rock, Sediment, Soil, and Mineral Samples, United States and Territories
January 23, 2026
The Geochemical Data Portal assembles, reformats, corrects, and archives data obtained from the geochemical analysis of geologic samples collected for USGS and Department of Energy studies.
Beginning in 1962, analytical laboratories now housed within the Mineral Resources Program have recorded geochemical data in digital databases. During this time, these laboratories have analyzed over 1.5 million samples of geologic material such as soils, stream sediments, and rocks, and continue to analyze several thousand samples annually. The database representing these analyses contains in excess of 59 million analytical determinations.

The data set contains geochemical data for 1,524,014 rock, sediment, soil, and mineral samples collected by the U.S. Geological Survey within US state, territory or Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) boundaries, and analyzed from 1962 through 2023 either in the analytical laboratories of the Geologic Discipline of the USGS or by contract with commercial analytical laboratories. These data...

The Alaska Geochemical Database Version 4.0 (AGDB4) contains geochemical data compilations in which each geologic material sample has one best value determination for each analyzed species, greatly improving efficiency of use. The relational database includes historical geochemical data archived in the USGS National Geochemical Database (NGDB), the Atomic Energy Commission National...

The Alaska Geochemical Database Version 4.0 (AGDB4) contains geochemical data compilations in which each geologic material sample has one “best value” determination for each analyzed species. Best values are for mineral exploration and assessment purposes and should not be assumed to be appropriate for other uses.

This software release consists of two tools for filtering and reformatting geochemical data from the associated data release of Granitto and others, 2025. They are provided as a Python toolbox for use in ArcGIS Pro, and scripts that can be used in the open-source software QGIS. Inputs to the ArcGIS tools should be stored in the file geodatabase or GeoPackage formats. The QGIS tools can...
