On Sunday, December 8th, from 12:00-1:00 pm, Dr. Lucy Jones gave the public lecture at the American Geophysical Union's 2013 Annual Fall Meeting, "Imagine an America without Los Angeles: Natural Hazards and the Complexity of Urban America." In her presentation she shared vulnerabilities of our modern society to natural disasters, with an emphasis on the importance of recognizing the intertwined nature of system components. Various interdependencies themselves increase vulnerability through the potential for failures to cascade into further triggered consequences. For instance, dependence of many systems on the availability of working internet is just one example in which failure can lead to disruption in many other services such as transportation, power and communications.
