A sulfur-covered terrace rises about 2.5 m from the floor of Puka Nui, on the south flank of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō. The south rim of Puka Nui is in the background.

On June 8, lava was visible within an old collapse pit on the south side of Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō, but it was much deeper than on June 1.
