Salinas and Carmel Rivers Basin Study: Paso Robles Model Update
The existing Paso Robles Basin Model (PRBM) needed to be updated and enhanced to achieve the timeline and objectives of the Salinas Carmel River Basin Study (SCRBS) for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation (Reclamation) and local partners.
The modifications to the PRBM for the SCRBS will result in a preliminary model: the Paso Robles Integrated Hydrologic Model (PRIHM). The preliminary model will improve the utility of the model results for SCRBS, and will provide a foundation for a more detailed model, to be developed by the Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA). The model will be used for evaluating management alternatives associated with meeting requirements of the California Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA).
Objective
USGS is partnering with Agency staff and the GSA to implement desired model improvements from this study into the GSA model. The PRIHM will be a preliminary model used to evaluate relative changes among scenarios in the SCRBS.
Science Plan
A preliminary hydrologic model of the Paso Robles groundwater basin will be developed for the SCRBS to evaluate future water supply under changing climate, land use, and water use. Once the model is documented and archived for the SCRBS, the USGS will support the SCRBS partners in transferring relevant model input into a Groundwater Sustainability Model that will be developed by these partners.
