The USGS Center of Excellence for Geospatial Information Science (CEGIS), researches and develops solutions and innovations for The National Map as part of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, the emerging Geospatial and GeoSemantic Web.

The presentations and publications of the CEGIS researchers document the research accomplishments for geospatial data from The National  Map that include advances in

  • electronic topographic map design, 
  • generalization, 
  • data integration, 
  • map projections, 
  • sea level rise modeling, 
  • geospatial semantics, 
  • ontology, 
  • user-centered design, 
  • volunteer geographic information, and 
  • parallel and grid computing

 

Created by an act of Congress in 1879, the USGS provides science for a changing world, which reflects and responds to society’s continuously evolving needs. 

As the science arm of the Department of the Interior, the USGS brings an array of earth, water, biological, and mapping data and expertise to bear in support of decision-making on environmental, resource, and public safety issues.
