Beginners Git, GitLab & Software Release Carpentries-like Training for USGS Personnel to Facilitate Open Science
Teach USGS personnel Git within code.usgs.gov to develop, track, share, and publish their code.
A Carpentries Git and GitHub lesson exists; however, many USGS students face barriers completing the lesson or adapting to the USGS IT environment. Best practices have been documented for using Git and producing a USGS software release; however, many students find Git and software release intimidating and do better live coding with an instructor. We will develop a carpentries-like training that leverages existing resources to enable students to learn these skills using USGS technology by live coding with an instructor. With these trainings, more USGS personnel will adopt Git workflows that increase their efficiency, reproducibility, and collaboration, thus increasing open science practices at USGS. More scientists will release software since the process will be demystified. Outputs will be advertised via CDI meetings/Teams channels and incorporated into CDI Carpentries trainings provided each year. We will also document lessons learned on adapting Carpentries lessons to USGS.
