IoT Ingest Stack: Software Resources and Guidance for Leveraging IoT Monitoring in USGS Networks
Expanding USGS capabilities in High-Frequency and Hyper-Local Data Collection using IoT Technology and Cloud Data Services.
Conventional USGS field monitoring can often be limited by power usage, telemetry, and the size of equipment. These constraints can be especially prohibitive when trying to collect high-frequency, hyper-local data. Various USGS groups have begun to leverage low-power Internet of Things (IoT) monitoring technology paired with cloud platforms to address these limitations. However, these novel systems can be difficult to implement and the resulting IoT-Cloud infrastructure that teams deploy is often uniquely configured to a single monitoring network and cannot be easily replicated. The goal of this project is to build a framework for implementing IoT monitoring technology across USGS networks by developing a package of software tools and workflows that streamline the development of IoT infrastructure in AWS cloud environments. These tools will enable teams to adopt new monitoring technology and help greatly expand USGS assets in highly granular, real-time, earth-system data.
