Water Use in South Dakota
The U.S. Geological Survey collects and disseminates data on water use in South Dakota and the Nation through the National Water-Use Information Program. National water-use information, which includes water-use estimates for the State of South Dakota, has been published every five years since 1950. General water-use information and data used to compile national reports since 1985 are available from the National Water Use HomePage. Data are grouped by major water-use category such as irrigation or public-supply.

Domestic water use includes water forhousehold purposes, such as washing clothes. Irrigation is the largest use of water in South Dakota.Irrigationwithdrawals during 2005 totaled about 292 million gallons per day. Public water systems served about 666,210 people or about 86 percent of South Dakota's population in 2005. Livestock water use in South Dakota occurred in every county in 2005. Cattle are the predominant livestock raised in South Dakota. - Publications

Estimated use of water in the United States in 2010
Water use in the United States in 2010 was estimated to be about 355 billion gallons per day (Bgal/d), which was 13 percent less than in 2005. The 2010 estimates put total withdrawals at the lowest level since before 1970. Freshwater withdrawals were 306 Bgal/d, or 86 percent of total withdrawals, and saline-water withdrawals were 48.3 Bgal/d, or 14 percent of total withdrawals. Fresh surface-wateAuthorsMolly A. During 2005, withdrawals from ground-water and surface-water sources in South Dakota for the eight categories of offstream use totaled about 500 million gallons per day (Mgal/d). Of total withdrawals, about 271 Mgal/d was withdrawn from ground water and about 230 Mgal/d was withdrawn from surface water. During 2000, the total amount of water withdrawn from ground- and surface-water sources in South Dakota was about 528 Mgal/d (million gallons per day). Of this amount, about 222 Mgal/d, or 42 percent of the total, was from ground water. Surface-water withdrawals were about 306 Mgal/d, or 58 percent of the total.
