FORT scientists Beth Orning and Cam Aldridge are co-authors of a new study exploring a modeling approach to evaluate post-fire revegetation and habitat restoration outcomes for greater sage-grouse using a novel adaptation of recent advances in state-transition simulation models (STSMs).

The study was a collaboration between CSU, FORT, FRESC, and WERC, funded by the Bureau of Land Management, that leveraged existing sagebrush growth and regeneration data, sagebrush vegetation dynamics, and simulation modeling with guideline objectives used for sage-grouse habitat management across sagebrush systems. Results from the study underscore the need for broad-scale habitat restoration strategies that expand the ability to reestablish sagebrush in large, burned areas, as well as strategies for defining which areas should be prioritized for revegetation within the biome. The publication, entitled "Using state-and-transition simulation models to scope post-fire success in restoring greater sage-grouse habitat", is published in the journal Ecological Modelling, and can be accessed at https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ecolmodel.2023.110396.
