Inspired Planet Productions Interviews GLSC scientist for documentary

Timothy O’Brien (GLSC, Ann Arbor, Michigan) was interviewed by Zach Melnick from Inspired Planet Productions regarding the expansion of Bloater Coregonus hoyi populations in Lake Huron that has occurred over the last 20 years. Timothy and the USGS team on the R/V Sturgeon are conducting their annual pelagic prey fish survey in Lake Huron. Inspired Planet Productions has been the creative force behind the documentary film All Too Clear which explores the impact of Dreissenid mussels on the Great Lakes. Impacts of Dreissenid mussels on the Great Lakes, which have included reducing nutrients throughout the water column and altering benthic habitats, has had the side effect of creating extremely clear water in some of the lakes. This condition has afforded the opportunity to capture footage of fish behavior in deep water. While several native fish species in Lake Huron have been negatively impacted by Dreissenid mussels, some pelagic species, such as Bloater, have seemed to thrive in this new food web. In the late summer, Bloater often form dense schools in the offshore waters of southern Lake Huron.
