Participation costs, including airfare, hotel, and per diem expenses, are paid with funds itemized in the approved budget for each proposal.
The number of Working Groups supported by the Powell Center each year is determined by the number of deserving proposals and available funds.
Proposals must include a budget justification. Some funds are available for page charges. Up to $100,000 is available to support Fellows. WSC USGS salary can be requested for WSC scientists only while on-site at the Powell Center in Fort Collins. Working Group leaders prepare lists of names, contact information, and budget for participants invited to their meetings.
The budget you submit is an estimate. Approved projects are assigned a budget. While most Working Groups meet several times over several years, proposals with different timelines will be considered. Significant budgetary deviations must be discussed well in advance with the Powell Center Directors. Please refer to The Finances of Successful Proposal table on this page to understand how the budget works.
If you are submitting a proposal from a university refer to The Finances of Successful Proposal table on this page to understand how the budget works. We suggest you notify your Sponsored Programs office of your intent to apply for Powell Center funds. If your proposal is successful and you request a Fellow housed at your institution, USGS will post an Announcement of Opportunity on Grants.Gov, to which you and your institution may apply with a formal budget and proposal.
Please fill out the Powell Center budget sheet [xlsx] and include it in the body of your proposal.
