Kansas Water Use information is critical for water supply planning, regulation, and scientific studies that further our understanding of water resources.
Please visit the National Water Use Information Program web page at http://water.usgs.gov/watuse/ for further information on definitions, publications, and guidelines for data collection. Categorical Kansas 2010 water-use data can be accessed and downloaded at http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ks/nwis/water_use/.
Water-use data are collected on an annual basis by the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Division of Water Resources, as part of this agency’s role in managing water rights and water resources in Kansas (http://agriculture.ks.gov/divisions-programs/dwr). The Kansas Water Office uses the data in its programs involving water planning, water conservation, Water Assurance Districts, and Water Marketing (http://www.kwo.org/).
Annual publications of Kansas municipal and irrigation water-use data are prepared by the USGS, DWR, and KWO. The most recent national report available is for 2010 and the next report in this series will present information for 2018.

This report, prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Kansas Department of Agriculture, Division of Water Resources, presents derivative statistics of 2013 irrigation water use in Kansas. The published regional and county-level statistics from the previous 4 years (2009–12) are shown with the 2013 statistics and are used to calculate a 5-year average. This fact sheet describes water-use data collection and quantities of surface water and groundwater diverted for public supply in Kansas for the years 1990 through 2012. Data used in this fact sheet are from the Kansas Department of Agriculture’s Division of Water Resources and the Kansas Water Office. Water used for public supply represents about 10 percent of all reported water withdrawals in KaAuthorsJoan F. KennyIrrigation trends in Kansas, 1991-2011
This fact sheet examines trends in total reported irrigation water use and acres irrigated as well as irrigation water use by crop type and system type in Kansas for the years 1991 through 2011. During the 21-year period, total reported irrigation water diversions varied substantially from year to year as affected primarily by climatic fluctuations. Total reported acres irrigated remained comparatAuthorsJoan F. Kenny, Kyle E. JuracekDescription of 2005-10 domestic water use for selected U.S. cities and guidance for estimating domestic water use
Domestic water-use and related socioeconomic and climatic data for 2005-10 were used in an analysis of 21 selected U.S. cities to describe recent domestic per capita water use, investigate variables that potentially affect domestic water use, and provide guidance for estimating domestic water use. Domestic water use may be affected by a combination of several factors. Domestic per capita water useAuthorsJoan F. Kenny, Kyle E. JuracekWater use in Kansas, 1990-2000
This fact sheet compares water use in 1990, 1995, and 2000 for the 12 major river basins in Kansas. Of these 3 years, irrigation water use was largest in 1990 and smallest in 1995, largely because of differing climatic conditions. Irrigation averaged about 85 percent of total water use in Kansas each year, and ground water pumped in the western part of the State provided most of the irrigation watAuthorsJoan F. Annual State reporting requirements yield data on public water-supply use in Kansas. data is essential for responsible and effective use of the information by various State agencies. This fact sheet describes water-use data evaluation, illustrates variations in public-supply water use from 1987 through 1997, and documents improvements in water conservation efforts among Kansas public water supplieAuthorsJoan F.
