Endocrine Disruption

The endocrine system produces hormones vital for controlling reproduction, metabolism and growth and development. The endocrine system can be disrupted by chemicals causing estrogenicity interrupting this system of hormones.  intersex, other indicators of exposure to estrogenic endocrine disruptors and a lack of reproductive success in several documented anadromous fishes is of concern to resource managers as well as the public. Research to identify the chemicals/chemical mixtures, sources, transport and mechanisms of effects is important to better understand endocrine disruption.
