Statistics and information on the mining industry in Guyana.

Overview

In 2024, Guyana was not a globally significant producer of mineral commodities. Production of mineral commodities contributed 70% to Guyana’s gross domestic product, including mineral fuels, 66.7%, and nonfuel mineral commodities, 4.7%. Nonfuel mineral commodities produced in Guyana included bauxite, cement, diamonds, gold, manganese, and industrial minerals such as loam, sand, and crushed stone. The legislative framework for the mineral sector is provided by the Mining Act 1989 (Cap. 65:01), the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) Act, and the Guyana Gold Board (GGB) Act. The GGMC oversees the mineral sector and monitors, promotes, and regulates the use of the country’s mineral resources. The GGB was established to oversee and manage the buying and selling of gold in Guyana and to conduct gold-trading activities. Under the GGB Act, all gold produced in the country must be sold either to the GGB or to one of its authorized agents, such as licensed gold dealers. Most mineral commodities were produced by private companies in partnership with the Government.
