In 2024, Lithuania was the world’s 10th-ranked producer of peat, accounting for 2.5% of global production. Other mineral commodities produced in the country included cement, clay, dolomite, granite, limestone, nitrogen (ammonia), sand and gravel, and sulfur. Production of mineral commodities contributed about 1.98% to Lithuania’s gross domestic product (GDP). Specifically, mining and quarrying contributed 0.47%; the manufacture of metal products, 1.02%; and the manufacture of non-metallic commodities, 0.49%. In 2024, Lithuania exported 922,000 metric tons (t) of peat products, valued at \$109 million. The leading destination was the Netherlands, followed by Poland, Germany, Italy, and Morocco. The legislative framework for the mineral sector in Lithuania is provided by the Underground Law No. I-1034/1995.
The Geological Survey of Lithuania oversees the mineral sector and issues licenses or permits to carry out underground investigations. All mineral commodities were produced by private companies, both domestic and foreign owned. Peat production for horticultural use increased by 20% in 2024 compared with 2023. However, peat production for fuel use decreased by 74%, owing to new excise taxes and CO2 emission taxes adopted by the Government in 2023.
