Discrete Water Quality Sampling in New Mexico
The New Mexico Department of Agriculture (NMDA) is responsible for managing pesticide usage in New Mexico. The NMED contracted with the New Mexico USGS to assist in setting up a sampling plan to monitor pesticides in selected surface water sites throughout the state.
The Canadian River Municipal Water Authority (CRMWA) wishes to manage the salinity levels on the Canadian River as it flows into Texas. The CMWUA contracted with the New Mexico USGS to take periodic water quality samples.

Approach:
- NMDA - Sample for a comprehensive suite of pesticides at selected sites throughout the state once per year.
- CRMWA – Sample for major ions at two sites, once per quarter. In addition, complete two additional visits per year to these sites to measure water temperature, dissolved oxygen, specific conductivity, and pH.
Objectives:
- NMDA – provide sample results for pesticides at surface water sites near urban areas and areas where there is significant agricultural activity.
- CRMWA – provide sample results in furtherance of the Salinity Reduction Program.
Deliverables and Other Details –
- Data collected are published on USGS NWIS web
- NMDA – a summary of yearly results is provided
