Oklahoma-Texas Water Science Center Capabilities

Science Center Objects

The USGS Oklahoma-Texas Water Science Center (OTWSC) collects high-quality hydrologic data and conducts objective scientific investigations on the quantity, quality, and use and availability of surface- and groundwater resources within Oklahoma and Texas. Specific water-resources activities of the OTWSC are categorized into six Science Theme areas: Streams and Lakes, Groundwater and Springs, Water Quality, Water Use and Availability, Floods and Droughts, and Additional Studies.

STREAMS AND LAKES SCIENCE

USGS has been collecting surface water data in Oklahoma and Texas since 1889. Today, the USGS National Water Information System database contains more than 2,300 sites in Oklahoma and Texas with surface-water data. OTWSC collects real-time (continuously monitored) data at more than 750 stream & lake stations.

GROUNDWATER AND SPRINGS SCIENCE

USGS has been collecting groundwater data in Oklahoma and Texas since 1898.  Today, the USGS National Water Information System database contains more than 19,300 sites in Oklahoma and Texas with groundwater-level data. OTWSC collects real-time (continuously monitored) data at more than 30 groundwater stations.

WATER QUALITY SCIENCE

USGS has been collecting water-quality data in Oklahoma and Texas since 1907. Today, the USGS National Water Information System database contains more than 11,000 sites in Oklahoma and Texas with discrete water-quality data. USGS OTWSC collects real-time (continuously monitored) data at more than 90 water-quality stations.

FLOODS AND DROUGHT SCIENCE

Oklahoma and Texas experience extreme floods and droughts. Recent statewide drought from 2010 to 2015 pushed streams and water supply reservoirs across the state to historic lows. Frequent and severe storms from May to June 2015 caused widespread flooding, often extreme, in every river basin except the Rio Grande. OTWSC provides data critical for drought and flood mitigation.
