Feeding activities of black skimmers in Guyana Feeding activities of black skimmers in Guyana

Discrepancies appear in the literature concerning the influence of time of day and tide on feeding activities of Black Skimmers (Rhynchops niger). Observations from Guyana, South America, suggest that skimmers do feed during the day, but are strongly cued to receding tides.

Effects of tillage practices and carbofuran exposure on small mammals Effects of tillage practices and carbofuran exposure on small mammals

We compared population estimates, body mass, movement, and blood chemistry of small mammals between conventionally tilled and no-till cornfields in Maryland and Pennsylvania to evaluate the effects of tillage practices and carbofuran exposure on small mammals. Estimates suggest that populations of white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) were not significantly related (P > 0.05) to...

Summer-fall survival of American woodcock in Maine Summer-fall survival of American woodcock in Maine

We estimated summer-fall (15 Jun-20 Oct) survival for 32 adult and 96 fledged young American woodcock (Scolopax minor) radiotagged in eastern Maine during 1982-84 using single-interval, multiple-interval, and nonparametric (product-limit) methods. Single-interval survival estimates were 0.90, 0.88, 0.57, and 0.73 for adult males, adult females, young males, and young females...

Lead and cadmium concentrations in mink from northern Idaho Lead and cadmium concentrations in mink from northern Idaho

The purposes of this study were to determine concentrations of cadmium and lead in mink (Mustela vison) in northern Idaho, to discuss potential effects, and to determine whether levels have declined. Mink (skinned carcasses) from the Coeur d'Alene River system (northern Idaho) were ohtained from trappers during the 1981-82 (n = 17) and 1986-87 (n= 14) seasons. Livers of all eight mink...

Survival of northern bobwhites in Georgia: Cropland use and pesticides Survival of northern bobwhites in Georgia: Cropland use and pesticides

At the end of 18 weeks during spring and summer in 1986 and 1987, survival was 0.5339 and 0.3709 respectively. Repeated organophosphorus insecticide sprays to crops in 1987 may have significantly reduced survival of bobwhites beyond that seen in 1986 when few pesticides were applied. Cropland use was high; birds were found less than 50% of the time in or less than 100 meters of field...

Small mammal populations at hazardous waste disposal sites near Houston, Texas, USA Small mammal populations at hazardous waste disposal sites near Houston, Texas, USA

Small mammals were trapped, tagged and recaptured in 0·45 ha plots at six hazardous industrial waste disposal sites to determine if populations, body mass and age structures were different from paired control site plots. Low numbers of six species of small mammals were captured on industrial waste sites or control sites. Only populations of hispid cotton rats at industrial waste sites...
