Kirtland's warblers on the nesting grounds during the post- breeding period Kirtland's warblers on the nesting grounds during the post- breeding period
Information indicates that a substantial number of breeding birds remain in Michigan through September, and a few individuals probably remain into early October. Migration apparently consists of two waves of migrants: an early departure (mid-August to early September); and late departure (late September). Based on our findings, we recommend that major Kirtland's warbler areas be kept...

Breeding biology and habitat use of black ducks Breeding biology and habitat use of black ducks
Forested wetlands are Important habitats for black ducks nesting in the Northeast. Invertebrates, with their high protein content, are primary foods of females during egg laying and for rapidly growing ducklings. Beaver-created and modified wetlands provide excellent habitat for feeding as well as protective cover. As these wetlands age, their quality declines after 7-10 years, and...

Lead poisoning and other mortality factors in trumpeter swans Lead poisoning and other mortality factors in trumpeter swans
Lead poisoning and other causes of mortality of trumpeter swans were investigated. Necropsies or Pb concentrations in livers were available for 72 trumpeter swans found dead in seven western states from 1976 to 1987; data from other published and unpublished sources also are summarized. Ingestion of lead artifacts accounted for about 20% of the known mortality of trumpeter swans in the...

Long-term persistence of dieldrin, DDT, and heptachlor epoxide in earthworms Long-term persistence of dieldrin, DDT, and heptachlor epoxide in earthworms
Earthworms can accumulate persistent soilborne insecticides and are an important source of contamination of terrestrail wildlife. We treated experimental plots once with dieldrin, DDT, or heptachlor, and measured changes in insecticide concentrations in earthworms over a 20-year period. We estimated 'half-times,' defined as the time for a concentration in earthworms to be reduced by half...

Behaviour of captive canvasbacks Aythya valisineria fed different diets during winter Behaviour of captive canvasbacks Aythya valisineria fed different diets during winter
Time activity budget studies were conducted on captive Canvasbacks manintained on ad libitum diets with varying levels of protein and energy during the winter of 1978-79 and 1979-80. No differences could be detected in the behaviour of the ducks as a result of the diets they received. Differences due to season and sex were observed for some behaviours. Activity decreased (P

Pulmonary lesions in disseminated visceral coccidiosis of sandhill and whooping cranes Pulmonary lesions in disseminated visceral coccidiosis of sandhill and whooping cranes
Fifty cranes, consisting of 46 sandhill (Grus canadensis) and four whooping cranes (Grus americana), were studied. Eighteen sandhill cranes and the four whooping cranes were naturally infected with disseminated visceral coccidiosis (DVC). The remaining sandhill cranes were chicks experimentally infected with oocysts of Eimeria reichenowi and/or E. gruis; five chicks served as controls...

Evaluation and experimentation with duck management strategies Evaluation and experimentation with duck management strategies
Our knowledge of the effects of hunting regulations on duck populations has been based largely on retrospective studies of historical data. We have reached the limits of what can be learned in this way. Future knowledge gains will likely come about only through experimentation and adaptive management.

Agricultural chemicals and prairie pothole wetlands: Meeting the needs of the resource and the farmer -- U.S. perspective Agricultural chemicals and prairie pothole wetlands: Meeting the needs of the resource and the farmer -- U.S. perspective
Included are the reasons for concern over the effects of agrichemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) on prairie-pothole wetlands in the United States. Summarized are the results of studies conducted to date on this topic. Identified is additional research needed to assess the impacts of agrichemicals on these wetlands. Included is a discussion of management strategies and initiatives...

Hepatic glutathione metabolism and lipid peroxidation in response to excess dietary selenomethionine and selenite in mallard ducklings Hepatic glutathione metabolism and lipid peroxidation in response to excess dietary selenomethionine and selenite in mallard ducklings
Selenium from selenomethionine accumulated in a dose-dependent manner in the liver, resulting in a decrease in hepatic-reduced glutathione with a corresponding decrease in total hepatic thiols. There was a dose-dependent increase in the oxidized to reduced glutathione ratio, and an increase in lipid peroxidation. These findings indicate that Se in the diet at 10 ppm and higher causes...

Habitat area requirements of breeding forest birds of the middle Atlantic states Habitat area requirements of breeding forest birds of the middle Atlantic states
Conservation of birds requires an understanding of their nesting requirements, including area as well as structural characteristics of the habitat. Previous studies have shown that many neotropical migrant bird species seem to depend on extensive forested areas, but the specific area requirements of individual species have not been clarified sufficiently to aid in design and management...

Environmental contaminants and diving ducks in San Francisco Bay Environmental contaminants and diving ducks in San Francisco Bay
Concentrations of selenium, mercury, and cadmium were measured in surf scoters in San Francisco Bay to assess possible effects of contaminants on health or reproduction of diving ducks.
