The distribution of the sperm whale, Physeter catodon, was documented in the Gulf of Mexico during 1979 to 1981 using regular aerial surveys and opportunistic sightings from ships. A total of 47 adults and 12 young animals was sighted in groups containing from one to 14 animals.
