USGS assists in post-storm seafloor survey following partial collapse of Santa Cruz wharf
Following the partial collapse of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf during January 2025 storms, the USGS Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center was requested to help map seafloor debris by NOAA’s Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
In response to this request, the USGS conducted a geophysical survey adjacent to the wharf and surrounding waters under California State Lands Permit #8394 in late January 2025.
A pole-mounted, high-frequency (234 kHz) high-resolution SWATH interferometric sidescan and a Norbit Winghead multibeam bathymetric survey system were both used on the 36' USGS research vessel Parke Snavely to image the debris extent from the wharf collapse. These data were used by staff at the NOAA Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary to locate, characterize, and quantify any wharf debris that was deposited on the Sanctuary seafloor.
