Brazilian Agencies Partner With USGS On Water Programs
The USGS International Programs Office has intermittently collaborated with Brazil's Geological Survey (CPRM) since the early 1970's. With the creation of the Brazilian National Water Agency (ANA), Brazil's hydrologic monitoring network has taken on a higher socioeconomic importance.
The collaboration agreements between USGS and ANA/CPRM have strengthened the Brazilian streamgaging network as well as provided funding for USGS scientists.
History
- Early 1970's USGS begins collaboration with Brazil's Geological Survey (CPRM)
- In 2000, Brazil establishes National Water Agency (ANA) which oversees 80% of the hydrologic monitoring network.
- Beginning in 2014, USGS personnel participated in a US Army Corp of Engineers-led workshop in Brazil where staff assisted with evaluation of field sites, field procedures and data management techniques related to streamgaging efforts. As an outcome of this workshop, ANA was provided a list of recommendations and findings that led to a Letter of Agreement (LOA) for ongoing activities starting in 2015.
- The 2015 LOA led to the formation of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the ANA, USGS and CPRM for “scientific and technical cooperation in earth sciences” between the United States and Brazil.
- Since 2015, USGS has helped Brazil optimize their streamgaging network. Additionally, USGS activities have also included a joint mission between USGS and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for water-quality monitoring and analysis and an enhanced partnership with Bureau of Reclamation (BOR)-related to water transfer systems design and management and dam safety.
- All activities coordinated through the oversight of the USGS International Office and the USGS Water Mission Area.
