Probabalistic projections for recovery of the endangered Cui-ui Probabalistic projections for recovery of the endangered Cui-ui
The cui-ui Chamistes cujus, a lake sucker found in only Pyramid Lake, Nevada, is listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, and a recovery plan has been formulated in an effort to save it. We used a population simulation model that incorporated environmental stochasticity in water availability to project the persistence of cui-ui over 200 years, Based on this approach...

Prolonged swimming performance of northern squawfish Prolonged swimming performance of northern squawfish
We determined the prolonged swimming performance of two size-classes of northern squawfish Ptychocheilus oregonensis at 12 and 18°C. The percentage of fish fatigued was positively related to water velocity and best described by an exponential model. At 12°C, the velocity at which 50% of the fish fatigued (FV50) was estimated to be 2.91 fork lengths per second (FL/s; 100 cm/s) for medium...

Monitoring of the in-river migration of smolts from two groups of spring chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), with different profiles of Renibacterium salmoninarum infection Monitoring of the in-river migration of smolts from two groups of spring chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), with different profiles of Renibacterium salmoninarum infection
Broodstock segregation based on the measurement of maternal Renibacterium salmoninarum infection levels by the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and the membrane filtration-fluorescent antibody technique (MF-FAT) was previously shown to affect the prevalence and levels of bacterial kidney disease (BKD) in progeny of chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), during...

Interaction assessment II: A tool for population and community management Interaction assessment II: A tool for population and community management
To successfully preserve or manage a species, we must understand how the community of which it is a part functions. We must know how environmental alterations affect the fitness not only of the species of interest, but also that of its competitors, predators, and prey; and we must know the form and intensity of the pertinent inter-species interactions. Interaction Assessment (INTASS) is...

Molecular cloning and sequence analysis of the gene coding for the 57kDa soluble antigen of the salmonid fish pathogen Renibacterium salmoninarum Molecular cloning and sequence analysis of the gene coding for the 57kDa soluble antigen of the salmonid fish pathogen Renibacterium salmoninarum
The complete sequence coding for the 57-kDa major soluble antigen of the salmonid fish pathogen, Renibacterium salmoninarum, was determined. The gene contained an opening reading frame of 1671 nucleotides coding for a protein of 557 amino acids with a calculated Mr value of 57190. The first 26 amino acids constituted a signal peptide. The deduced sequence for amino acid residues 27–61...
