Parasites and commensals of the West Indian manatee from Puerto Rico Parasites and commensals of the West Indian manatee from Puerto Rico
Metazoan parasites and commensals were collected from dead manatees salvaged in Puerto Rico. Thirty-five manatees were examined between 1980 and 1998. Parasites and commensals were identified in 20 (57%) manatees and included 3 species of helminths, 1 nematode (Heterocheilus tunicatus) and 2 digeneans (Chiorchis fabaceus and Cochleotrema cochleotrema). Two species of commensals were also

Modeling the effects of nutria (Myocastor coypus) on wetland loss Modeling the effects of nutria (Myocastor coypus) on wetland loss
We created a model to study the process in which nutria (Myocastor coypus) feeding activities lead to erosion and loss of marsh area. This model ties together data on nutria population dynamics and feeding behavior from the literature with data from field studies on the phenology of Scirpus americanus and Spartina patens conducted in the Barataria Basin, Louisiana, USA in 1992. The...

Management implications of fish trap effectiveness in adjacent coral reef and gorgonian habitats Management implications of fish trap effectiveness in adjacent coral reef and gorgonian habitats
A combination of visual census and trap sampling in St. John, USVI indicated that traps performed better in gorgonian habitat than in adjacent coral reef habitat. Although most families were seen more commonly in coral habitat, they were caught more often in gorgonian areas. Traps probably fished more effectively in gorgonian habitats, especially for migrating species, because traps...

Root and shoot responses of Taxodium distichum seedlings subjected to saline flooding Root and shoot responses of Taxodium distichum seedlings subjected to saline flooding
Variation among progeny of five half-sib family collections of baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) from three freshwater and two brackish-water seed sources subjected to saline flooding was evaluated Mini-rhizotrons (slant tubes) were used to monitor root elongation for a period of 99 days. Salinity level produced significant effects across all baldcypress half-sib families, with root...

Cumulative index to chemicals and to common and scientific names of species listed in Contaminant Hazard Reviews 1 through 34 Cumulative index to chemicals and to common and scientific names of species listed in Contaminant Hazard Reviews 1 through 34
The Contaminant Hazard Review (CHR) series--sponsored by the U.S. Geological Survey, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center--synthesizes ecotoxicological data for selected environmental contaminants, with emphasis on hazards to native species of flora and fauna. From 1985 through 1998, 34 reviews were published in various report series of the U.S. Department of the Interior on agricultural...
