Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) Outreach Program
CWPPRA outreach staff at WARC leads an outreach effort that educates and inspires a variety of audiences about Louisiana’s wetlands, land loss, and the CWPPRA wetland restoration program.
The Science Issue and Relevance: The Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) is federal legislation enacted in 1990 designed to identify, prepare, and fund construction of coastal wetlands restoration projects. Since its inception, 229 coastal restoration or protection projects have been authorized, benefiting over 100,611 acres in Louisiana. The annual budget for CWPPRA-funded restoration has varied through the nearly twenty-year life span of the Act, ranging between $30 million to nearly $80 million per year. The funded Louisiana projects provide for the long-term conservation of wetlands and dependent fish and wildlife populations with cost-effective plans for creating, restoring, protecting, or enhancing coastal wetlands.
Methodology for Addressing the Issue: The CWPPRA outreach staff at WARC leads a large and unique outreach effort that educates and inspires a variety of audiences about Louisiana’s wetlands, land loss, and the CWPPRA wetland restoration program. The CWPPRA Public Outreach Committee and its staff are charged with providing guidance, expertise, and support in communicating CWPPRA strategies and progress on Louisiana wetland restoration efforts to the public. The CWPPRA public outreach staff is responsible for the management of all day-to-day Public Outreach Committee efforts and acts as the liaison between the public, parish governments, and the various Federal agencies and partners associated with CWPPRA.
Future Steps: The CWPPRA outreach staff at WARC will continue to provide support for creating outreach/education materials that are distributed and used by a variety of audiences. Staff will provide guidance, expertise, and support in communicating CWPPRA strategies and progress with the public.
The CWPPRA outreach staff will continue to perform a variety of tasks to meet the needs of the public. Some of these tasks include:
- formulating information strategies and public education initiatives
- maintaining a website of complex technical and educational materials, and a social media presence on various social media outlets
- conducting legislative education about Louisiana wetlands, land loss, and the CWPPRA program
- developing audio-visual presentations, exhibits, publications, project factsheets, WaterMarks magazine, outreach products, and news releases
- conducting special events and project dedications and groundbreakings
- providing educators with teacher trainings and curriculum materials about Louisiana wetlands and coastal restoration
- responding to media requests and maintaining strong relationships and interactions with media outlets
Additionally, the committee will represent the CWPPRA Task Force at expositions and workshops to promote coastal wetlands restoration.
